This unparalleled
setting is the reason we stock the best quality merchandise.Originally three medieval cottages,
the building which is now the Henge Shop was enlarged and heightened in the
17th century. It was thatched until the early 20th century and is constructed
of sarsen stone, chalk blocks and brick. It features on Stukeley's map of
Avebury of 1723 and has served as the village fire station and post
office.
The current owners (since 1984) are Brian and Kathe Ashley.
Brian, a Cambridge graduate in history, has spent most of his career in
teaching. The successful Marlborough College Summer School was his brainchild.
He now offers guided tours of the Avebury area.
Kathe's interest in
quality Crafts has influenced the choice of goods on offer, mostly sourced from
the British Isles.
Example of items sold are gold, silver and pewter
jewellery, local pottery, Irish sweaters, Scottish woollens, tee-shirts and
memorabilia, fossils and minerals.
The books cover archaeology,
prehistory, local history and guides, paganism, druidism, witchcraft, dowsing,
crop formations, celtic design, complementary medicine, tarot and a bit of what
we fancy.
If the historic market town of Marlborough (Merlin's borough) is
the gateway to Ancient Britain, then Avebury, with the Henge Shop at its
centre, is where you start your journey into the country's roots. Welcome to
www.hengeshop.com. Enjoy your visit and come back!
