The Tor in Glastonbury, Somerset is a natural hill, which has been shaped by man in ancient history. It has seven terraces, now well worn and weathered. There are many myths and legends associated with the Tor. Some of these say that the Tor is the home of the Lord of the Underworld and King of the Fairies.
In early medieval time a monks retreat was founded on top of the Tor, probably in the times of St Patrick. Around 1100 A.D. a chapel of St Michael de Torre was built on the site. The chapel was destroyed by a powerful earthquake of 1275 and rebuilt sometime in the 14th century. St Michael's tower is all that remains of the chapel today.
